This Advert Bothers Me

Posted in Uncategorized on August 1, 2010 by Tom Fletcher

I don’t know what it is. I think it’s partly because we don’t get an answer to the question ‘Why are you whispering?’ Or is the answer supposed to be obvious, maybe?

To be honest, most – if not all – adverts bother me.

Literary / Genre (Cheese / Dairy)

Posted in Non-Fictions on August 1, 2010 by Tom Fletcher

A very quick blog post, this – just to say that I’ve written a piece (I don’t know what to call it – it’s not an essay or an article, and it’s not fiction, so… yeah, it’s just a ‘piece’) about the perceived distinction between ‘literary’ fiction and ‘genre’ fiction. It’s not a distinction I care for, really.

Anyway. The piece is at ‘other’ magazine, and this is the link to the particular post. Emma Unsworth has blogged on the subject as well, here. (She also says some good things about The Leaping, which is nice of her).

Also, there is this thread over at ‘other’ magazine, sparked by Gabriel Josipovici’s recent comments about ‘feted British authors’.

The two threads are related, in my mind.

Tonight I will watch John Carpenter’s The Thing for the first time. I have never understood the humour in Little Britain. I am not a fan of George Lamb. I am very excited about reading Inversions by Iain M Banks, The Cutting Room by Louise Welsh, and Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. We own a peace lily and it looks healthy enough, but I am worried that the soil in which it is potted is harbouring fungus gnats. I don’t know what to do about it. Well, I need to let it dry out. That’s not as simple as it maybe sounds though.

I hope you’re well.
